When I started the blog, I wrote about how impressed I was with cameraphones. They were convenient, easy to use and produce acceptable casual shots. 3 years on, cameraphone technology has improved tenfold that shots that were taken in that post could not hold a candle against the selfie cameras of today. With the varied choices available in the market, you could get more megapixels than you ever need. Or you could shoot cool slo-mo videos that previously only available in specialty cameras.

I recently went on a trip with the family to attend my brother’s convocation in North America. We visited Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and New York. I brought along my trustworthy Olympus and the new HTC Desire 816. The Oly was mostly left in the bag.

Reason was – convenience. It was much easier to grab the phone from the pocket, capture the shot, edit it and share it immediately. While the camera in the Desire isn’t top of its class, it is decent. With a good lighting, you could get really, really good shots.

Having that said, IMO today’s cameraphones of today still fall short of replacing a proper compact. Many still lack of a good glass and the limitation of the sensor size is evident in low-light situations.

But we’re getting there. It will be interesting to revisit the topic in another 3 years time.

***All shots in this post were taken with the HTC Desire 816 and edited with VSCOCAM***
