Hitchhiking to Turkey-Georgia Land Border

Hitchhiking to Turkey-Georgia Land Border

Earlier this year, I took an extended break from work and used the time off to vist places I always wanted to see. I bought a one-way ticket to Cambodia and off I went alone. 6 months, 8 books, over 10 countries, hundreds of hours in transit and thousands of kilometres later, I’m finally calling it a day. I’ve had friends asked me why I did what I did but truthfully, I wasn’t sure either. I guess I wanted to see the world. I wanted to embrace the complexity of the different cultures and customs of every corner of the world. And I wanted to do it while I was young. While I’m still willing to do it frugally – staying at dorms, taking overnight buses, Couchsurfing, hitchhiking and all.

Even though I currently have a black hole in my bank account, I have no regrets at all. The interesting people I’ve met, the conversations I’ve had, the – both beautiful and ugly – sights I’ve seen… they will stay with me for awhile.

Now that I’m back, I have the time to go through all the photos (9000+) and pick out the best ones. Thus, I’ll be blogging regularly in the next couple of months. There are stories to be told too, so stay tuned for updates!

2012 in review

Happy New Year folks! We have survived apocalypse and Gangnam Style in 2012, there’s no reason 2013 wouldn’t be a blast!

While we’re at it, the stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report:

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 9,100 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 15 years to get that many views.

Day Trip to Broga

In Personal,Photography on June 18, 2012 by eongxien Tagged: , ,

Last Saturday, our Leo Club organized a social day trip to Broga, a place infamous for hiking. Of course, we skipped the hiking this time having done that a couple of times. Joshua brought us to the famed ikan bakar (Grilled fish in aluminium foil) as well as to the temple & waterfall.

We should do this more often. =D

Lil’ Milo

Megasari recently got herself a poodle as a pet and named him Milo (After the dog in the 90s classic The Mask). Milo is very very sticky and even during his sleep, he would try to get as close as possible to us. And speaking of sleeping, HE LOVES TO SLEEP!

So we decided to film him during his afternoon nap last Sunday and post it onto Youtube. Enjoy!

Feisty Feline

In Personal on April 2, 2012 by eongxien Tagged: ,

A few weeks ago, our neighbourhood was graced by the arrival of 2 newly-born kittens. Both of them – one black, the other orange – seemed separated from their family and were wandering around the streets.  As they were clearly too young to be out on their own, we and a few neighbours took turns to feed them when they were at our compound. Despite being unadopted, they look healthy and are growing up like any regular cat should.

Being stray cats, it was normal for them to disappear into other streets, only to reappear a few days later. Thus, we assumed that the kittens have found new lives when we stopped seeing them for a week. Until one day, I came home from work to find little Orangey sitting in front of our house. I realized something was wrong when I got closer to him. On closer inspection, I noticed his fur has lost the glowing orange colour and his body were sticky as if his body was glazed by some kind of goo. The tail was naked and he has caught an infection on the ear.

Sensing my presence, he got close to me to demand my attention. Hearing his voiceless cries, it’s obvious that he was sick. The difference between his frail self and the one I’ve seen a week earlier couldn’t be any more starker.

Miri, Sarawak

In Personal,Photography on November 13, 2011 by eongxien

Being posted to an outstation location for work is always an opportunity to travel. However, being stationed in a small town like Miri for an accumulative period of 2 months, I’m starting to realize that maybe I’m not accustomed to the slower pace. I’m a city boy, after all.

Having that said, there are things I like about being in a small town. Firstly, there is none of the dreaded traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur. Secondly, the people here are nice. Thirdly, with the apartment located next to the coast, there’s always a nice breeze from the sea.

And the best thing about being next to the coast? The sunset.
